Overview

The Broadband Technician performs intermediate installations, disconnects and service changes for residential customers, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home). These services include, but are not limited to, video service, HSD Services, and home phone service.  This role performs moderate troubleshooting from the tap to the customer’s electronic devices (TV, DVD, Modem etc.).  This role may perform underground and/or aerial construction involved with system plant, along with its’ repair and maintenance supporting various customer-focused activities. This position will be responsible for installing, splicing, repairing and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable. This position will need to be knowledgeable of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications.

Responsibilities

Perform intermediate installation of all necessary cable wiring (interior and exterior) and hardware from the tap to the customer’s equipment for reception of cable and other company services that are offered for single and multi-family customers.

 

This may include construction of specific installation of trunk and distribution line passive and active devices, both new and rebuilt, including power supplies (60 and 90 V), amplifiers, hybrid splitter, directional couplers, power combiners and tap boxes.  Guys, lashes, re-lashes, pulls and splices cable.  Digs and places holes, lays cable, unreels, pulls and strings wire from pole to pole.  Removes from service or transfers from pole to pole. 

 

Perform all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NEC and NESC). 

 

Perform connects (new connects and reconnects), disconnects (requested and non-pays), upgrades, downgrades, relocates, install additional outlets, fiber connections, hardline cutovers, and install or remove equipment (i.e. converters) at single or multiple unit dwellings. 

 

Test equipment to identify and repair signal strength issues and ensure optimum reception.  Use Locators, TDR’s, FDR’s and read system maps.  This may include interpretation of system maps, calculation of signal loss of cable lines and/or devices using signal level meters, reading and understanding plant blueprints and updates to blueprints (excluding main trunk lines).  This may also include pole, ladder, tower or alternative structure climbing along with the potential use of a bucket truck. 

 

Monitor and record system, drop, and in-house leakage; properly record all required information on work orders, surveys, referrals, etc. 

 

Promote cable, internet, and other company services; educate customer on proper use of the service, including how to add additional services, channel lineups, proper equipment usage, and other services that are available. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

    1+ years’ cable installation & repair or professionally related experience -OR- current military service, or prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Other Qualifications

  • Previous customer service experience a plus. 
  • Basic knowledge and aptitude in electronics. 
  • Must be reliable and responsible, with a strong work ethic dedicated to a team. 
  • Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications or burial construction. 
  • Familiarity with company products and services. 
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task with limited instruction. 
  • Requires being available for on-call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel. 
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, as well as effective communications skills (verbal and written) for interaction with internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. 
  • Physical requirements may vary based on company needs: Ability to dig, lift and climb. 
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Broadband Premise Technician course. 
  • Ability to pass Department of Transportation physical and driver testing. 

The following requirements may be additionally applicable specific to construction-related positions

  • SCTE Service Technician Certification to include Technical Foundation, Customer Service, Troubleshooting; or SCTE BDS Certification; or NCTI Installer Technician Course. 
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Installer Certification. 
  • CDL Drivers’ License.
