After School Matters provides Chicago high school teens with high quality, after-school and summer opportunities to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond. Since 1991, more than 350,000 teens have participated in our hands-on, project-based after-school and summer programs in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Summary

of Position:

This internship provides a glimpse into the day-to-day activity and special projects of a nonprofit executive office. The Executive Office Intern will play an integral role in maintaining executive office activities and completing special projects for the whole organization. This role will help take special projects from inception to action, prepare for various meetings with key internal and external stakeholders, draft executive communications, support day-to-day operations of the executive office, and assist with reception duties and other tasks as assigned. The Executive Office Interns will report to the Special Projects Manager and work closely with the Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant to the CEO. This role provides great experience for someone interested in nonprofit leadership, project management, or public affairs.

This internship is expected to last from around June 1 to August 20, 2021, 40 hours per week, with an opportunity to extend part-time into the school year.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support organizational leadership by assisting in the development and execution of special projects that benefit teens, programs, instructors, and staff. Examples of special projects include planning a program visit for a high-profile leader, coordinating a group of staff for scenario planning, and assisting with events for After School Matters 30thAnniversary celebration.
  • Support the After School Matters executive office, including assisting with board relations, internal communications, and day-to-day office maintenance. Tasks include drafting emails, maintaining engagement trackers, and content planning.
  • Assist in the execution of large-scale organizational meetings and events, such as all-staff town halls and board meetings. Tasks include material development, logistics and presentation support.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including copying, mailing, and filing; calendar maintenance and scheduling; and preparing documents
  • Provide customer service including reception desk coverage and responding to teen and parent inquiries
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

:
  • Currently attending a post-secondary institution, seeking an associate's or bachelor's degree, studying nonprofit management, business administration, organizational communications, or a related field
  • Interested in a career in public affairs, project management, or nonprofit leadership.
  • After School Matters program alumni preferred but not required
