Job Summary

The head coach is responsible for the entire high school program in his/her sport. He/she directs assistant coaches, establishes goals, and evaluates the program on a yearly basis. He/she advises the athletic director regarding budgetary needs, enforces all MPS rules, conference rules and WIAA rules for athletes. Maintains a safe environment during practices and contests, establishes an award system in conjunction with the athletic director, recruits athletes, promotes his/her sport within the school and the community, assists with the selection of assistant coaches and is knowledgeable of current sport rules.

Position Summary

Duties and Responsibilities

I. Organizes the program

A. Recruits students for participation within MPS guidelines.
B. Conducts orientation meetings at feeder schools in conjunction with other head coaches.
C. Establishes season goals and evaluates the season in conjunction with the athletic director.
D. Conducts organizational meetings with athletes and assistant coaches.
E. Establishes practice times for all squads in conjunction with the athletic director.
F. Establishes season rules.
G. Arranges for practice facilities.
II. Coaches during practices and games
A. Conducts daily practice sessions for the varsity squads.
B. Attends all scheduled varsity games and coaches the varsity squad.
C. Assists assistant coaches with coaching techniques.
III. Maintains a safe environment during practices and games
A. Makes certain there is a first aid kit available at all times.
B. Establishes rules of safety for practices and games.
C. Supervises the locker room before and after practice.
D. Prepares accident reports and submits them to the proper authorities.
E. Summons medical assistance if needed in case of injury.
F. Keeps emergency notification records for all athletes readily available and
notifies the proper individuals in case of accident or injury to an athlete.
G. Maintains current knowledge regarding the extent of any athletic injury
and rehabilitation of the athlete.
H. MUST maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
Copy of cards MUST be on file with athletic director.
I. Supervises players on bus to and from athletic contests by riding the bus.
IV. Scheduling
A. Works with the Interscholastic Athletics Office in determining a conference schedule.
B. Establishes non-conference schedules, and any sub-varsity schedule as necessary.
C. Contracts officials for non-conference and sub-varsity contests as necessary.
D. Determines transportation needs for all squads in accordance with
existing policy and submits properly completed forms to the athletic director.
E. Attends and may not cancel practices and games unless prior
approval from Athletic Director.
V. Supplies and Equipment
A. Assists the athletic director to issue and collect all uniforms and equipment.
B. Stores all uniforms and equipment securely during the season.
C. Requests the purchase of supplies and equipment to the athletic director.
VI. Forms Management
A. Makes certain that all prospective athletes have completed the appropriate
forms and forwards them to the athletic director.
B. Maintains records of athletic participation.
C. Maintains appropriate individual records for athletes.
D. Completes and forwards all entry forms by the due date.
E. Submits all required forms to the proper authorities.
VII. Meetings
A. Attends WIAA rules interpretations meetings.
B. Attends meetings as required by the Interscholastic Athletics office, (pre-and
post season meetings, WIAA seeding)
C. Conducts periodic meetings with the coaching staff of the sport.
VIII. Public Relations
A. Promotes the sport and the total athletic program within the school and the community.
B. Assists the athletic director in the preparation of promotional items and programs.
C. Cooperates with the media.
D. Works cooperatively with community groups.
E. Works cooperatively with other members of the coaching staff.
IX. Rules
A. Is knowledgeable of all conference, MPS and WIAA rules.
B. Is knowledgeable of all current rules in their sport.
C. Attends clinics periodically to upgrade knowledge.
D. Practices and plays only eligible athletes.
E. Must complete WIAA Ref-Ranking.
F. Must watch WIAA sport video and take test prior to start of season.
